Thank you for volunteering for the North Dakota 4-H Youth Development Program! Please use the ND 4-H Volunteer Handbook to deepen your understanding of 4-H as a volunteer, the opportunities 4-H offers and how high-quality 4-H programs are intentionally designed to promote youth engagement.
There are many ways to participate as a 4-H volunteer: from leading a club, to teaching youth new skills, to judging a 4-H competitive event.
This handbook explains WHO North Dakota 4-H is, HOW the organization achieves positive outcomes for youth, WHAT you can do to effectively empower youth to reach their full potential and WHERE you can serve and grow your skills as well.
All 4-H volunteer screening resources can be found here:
These modules have been created for youth (including teen leaders and 4-H Club Officers) and adult 4-H volunteers, as well as Extension professionals. Each module includes a series of tips, resources, and activities to help make operating your 4-H club “EZ”. The goal is to share promising practices of organizing a 4-H Club that youth and adult volunteers can implement together.
Discover our "Lunch and Learn" webinars for our 4-H volunteers. We provide educational resources to equip volunteers with the tools they need!

North Dakota volunteer project trainings are usually held in the fall.
The 2024 North Central Region 4-H Volunteer Impact Study was a 12-state study of volunteers in the 4-H Youth Development Program. The purpose of the study was to document the impact volunteers have on the 4-H program.
Counties in North Dakota have the opportunity to provide a 4-H county ambassador program for older youth who are interested in participating in county events and gaining new leadership responsibilities. These ambassadors should meet as a group at least once a month to plan group and county 4-H events, engage in service-learning, and take part in leadership development activities. This group also provides a positive social opportunity for older 4-H youth.
This group is led by at least two 4-H county ambassador advisers. 4-H county ambassador advisers have the opportunity to work with the 4-H youth leaders in their county. 4-H county ambassadors need adult advisers who will work with them, advise them, and help them accomplish their goals. This guide is a resource for those advisers.
All instructors are trained by state instructors certified to teach courses. Adult volunteers receive training in shooting sports at state and regional workshops to become qualified instructors. 4-H teen leaders may wish to assist with instruction. Shooting sports leaders act as role models and must impart the 4-H philosophy and youth development objectives to 4-H members.
