An acting thespy is similar to performing a scene in drama class. This can be done as a monologue or preferably, a scene with a partner. After presenting your thespy, a team of teachers fills out a rubric that you get after the festival to tell you how good you did. The link to the left shows which publishers are approved for thespys. Please make sure the scene you choose is from an approved publisher.
A design or tech thespy is like talking to a group of professionals to convince them that you are a great designer/technician to hire. When doing a design thespy, it is important to emphasize your process over the product.
For both types of thespy, it is crucial to read the rubric before and during your thespy creation process. Rubrics are how you will receive feedback on your thespy so it is very important to make sure you meet their requirements. The link to the site where all thespy rubrics can be found is attached above.
All sophomore, junior, and senior students attending the CA State Festival are required to do a thespy. Freshmen may do 1 thespy.
Each junior and senior may do 2 thespys (must be from 2 different categories, so you can't for example, present 2 stage management thespys from 2 different shows). Sophomores may only do 1 thespy.
To accommodate the growing number of students attending the state festival this year festival organizers have decided to require all those doing tech thespys or individual/duet performance to record a video presentation and submit it by January 31st. All submissions will be viewed digitally by judges and those who recieve a superior may be chosen to present their thespy again in person at the state festival.
