Over the course of the past three months, the administration of Notre Dame Preparatory High School (NDP) has worked tirelessly to prepare the campus and curriculum for our students, faculty/staff, and parents. This has been a prayerful process that began by seeking the intercession of our Father God and Blessed Mother and continued by seeking their guidance each and every day. NDP has sought insight and help through faculty and staff, Advisory Board members, parents, doctors and nurses, and anyone who was willing to give of their time and energy to help our community prepare for the best possible 2020-2021 school year. Throughout this journey of preparation, we have always kept in mind reverence as we sought God’s wisdom and guidance, respect for seeking others’ input and knowledge knowing we could not plan in isolation, and taking responsibility for making the right decisions for what is best for our students and faculty/staff.
The health and safety of our students, faculty/staff, and any visitors to campus is of utmost importance. All plans for returning to school have been designed with this at the forefront. Listed below are the procedures we will follow to ensure everyone’s safety.
Each day, students should take their temperature at home, review the COVID checklist, and review the COVID Flow Chart.
In order to ensure the safety of our students and staff, we have purchased body temperature kiosks. Anyone coming onto campus (must be in a mask) will be scanned at a kiosk before entering the interior of the campus. Kiosks will be located at the front office, the senior gate, and the junior lot. We have a fourth kiosk that can be placed where we see fit. Each person who enters our campus will be required to be in a mask, be checked through the kiosk, and to be Safe Environment Trained. To prevent the spread of any illness, especially during this time, masks will be required until further notice has been received from public health authorities. Anyone registering 99.9F degrees on the body scanner will report to the nurse’s office. The nurse will allow the student 3-5 minutes to cool off and then re-check their temperature. If the student still displays a temperature of 99.9F, they will be sent home. A new policy in place at our school will also require parents to have a designated pick up person for their student at all times If a student is sick/displays symptoms of being sick, we are requesting that the student is picked up within 30 minutes of being notified.
Create a cleaning and disinfecting schedule for classrooms, gym, offices etc
Office Keepers has been hired to provide additional janitorial services for NDP. Cleaning will be performed six nights per week, Sunday through Friday. Wednesday nights will be a complete fogging with COVID-19 disinfectant of all common spaces. Our on campus maintenance crew will continue to clean throughout the day and do a deeper clean on Wednesdays. In addition to this, each classroom will have a spray bottle of disinfectant to be used on all common hard surfaces between classes with special attention to desktops and door handles. Students will also be able to use disinfecting wipes to sanitize their desks upon entering each classroom.
Student restrooms will be open in the 400 and 700 buildings from campus opening through the end of the second break. Restrooms in the 500, 800 and 900 buildings will be open from the beginning of the third block until campus closing. All restrooms will be disinfected throughout each day. No more than two people will be allowed in a restroom at a time. Exterior restroom doors will be propped open to reduce touching of the doors and congestion. Two stall commodes will be available for use in girls rooms, one urinal in the boys and one sink in both will be available for use. Gymnasium restrooms will be open all day from campus opening until campus closing and with occupancy of four. No adjacent urinals or commodes will be available. One sink per bay will be open (two per restroom). These restrooms will be disinfected after each break period. Locker room restrooms will be closed and not available for use until further notice.
Staff and Faculty restrooms will be limited to the Guidance department, the administration building, south 500, coaches’ offices, nurse’s office and the referee room. A can of Lysol disinfectant spray will be available in each of these restrooms and is the responsibility of the staff member using the restroom to spray down doors, handles, and levers after use.
Confirm personal distancing protocols for classrooms/gym, etc. and establishing office and communal space capacity
For classroom spacing, all desks will be spaced 6’ apart in each classroom. We have determined that we can safely put 18 desks in a traditional classroom. Art spaces and science spaces will be spaced differently due to the workspace needed for completing projects and labs. We will remove any excess furniture in the room including a second teacher desk, if there is one.
In our gym, we have determined that we could seat one class in the center on both sides and additional areas would be established on the main basketball court floor. We would use dividers currently located in the cafeteria to provide separation. Entering and exiting the gym would be segregated to the north bleachers and one floor classroom using the north doors to the lobby. West lobby doors would be used by the remaining students.
During our breaks, we will have our picnic tables spaced throughout campus. We have determined that we can have two students per table. We will have staggered release times from buildings to help with transitioning to pick up food or go to their table. We are looking at purchasing/renting awnings or tents that can be spaced around campus to provide additional shade for the students. Opening classrooms during breaks is an option, but we would like to utilize the outside space first to allow for cleaning between classes. We are looking at designating different spaces for those eating and those socializing. Those eating should maintain 6’ apart as they will not be wearing a mask. Those socializing will continue to wear their mask and can be 3’ apart.
Any student who exhibits symptoms of COVID-19 will be required to stay home and attend class online. If a student becomes ill while on campus, they will be required to go directly to the nurse’s office. We have a designated COVID-19 room for students with restroom facilities. Students who receive a positive COVID-19 test will be required to notify the school immediately. The school nurse will then inform the Maricopa County Health Department. Should 7% of those on campus test positive for COVID-19, NDP will suspend in-person classes and close the campus for a minimum of two weeks.
