The main purpose of the Commonwealth Acts enacted during the Commonwealth period in Philippine history (1935-1946) was to establish and protect fundamental civil liberties and rights for Filipinos. After the Philippines gained Commonwealth status in 1935, preparatory to full independence, these acts laid the legal framework for transitioning from American colonial rule to an independent republican democratic government
