5pm-4pm
On September 30, 2022, the Multiracial/Multiethnic Student Association of Notre Dame (MMSAND) and The Muslim Student Association (MSA) gathered to run their first joint retreat. In response to high interest, the retreat was opened to students of ALL YEARS. The retreat focused on bringing together undergraduate students from the tri-campus community at Notre Dame to have personal reflection on axes of intersectional identity, connecting cross-culturally, and spirituality. It was intended to serve as a time for students to get away from the bustle of school and take time to reflect on their experiences over the past semester. There was a turnout of 28 attendees total with students from the University of Notre Dame and St. Mary's College in attendance.
As this was a joint retreat between MMSAND and MSA, prayer was scheduled throughout the retreat. For students not participating in prayer, they were encouraged to sit, meditate, and reflect on a topic until the retreat transitioned into its next event. Retreat themes focused on: (1) navigating spirituality at Notre Dame, (2) authenticity and “uncovering” oneself, (3) the Monoracial Paradigm, and (4) connecting cross-culturally. There was a spirituality panel where upperclassmen from different religious backgrounds spoke about their own experiences with faith and spirituality with an emphasis on students raised in non-Catholic backgrounds. There were also Witness Talks, which were 10-20 minute speeches from club officers detailing a personal reflection on identity and connecting authentically on campus.Â
MMSAND would like to thank Campus Ministry, MSPS, and the Liu Institute for their support and guidance throughout the planning process as well as ND Day donors from spring 2022 who believed in our mission to put on this retreat. It was truly a special experience for those who attended, and MMSAND is grateful for all of those who helped make this experience happened.Â
