Schools compete as a team.
All spellers must be currently enrolled 4th grade students in a Catholic school in the United States.
If you do not have enough 4th graders to complete a team, you may include younger students (i.e., 3rd graders), but not students older than 4th grade (i.e., 5th graders).
A team consists of 8 students and 1 alternate. No student can participate in multiple rounds unless there is a tie breaker round.
There will be a total of 4 rounds.
A round will consist of two spellers from each school.
The announcer will pronounce, repeat, and put into a sentence 6 words from the !A deletrear! spelling list during each round.
Students will have 20 seconds to correctly spell each word on the !A deletrear! answer sheet.
At the end of word, the proctor will mark the spelled word correct or incorrect.
Accent marks and capitalization of proper nouns have to be correct in order to earn a point.
Clarity of handwriting is important for the proctor to be able to assess correct spelling.
A clear distinction must be evident in relation to the size of the first letter in the event that a proper noun is to be spelled.
The letter t must be correctly crossed and the letters i and j must be correctly dotted.
Accent marks, tildes, and umlauts must be legible and clearly marked above specific letters.
A student has the right to request a review if he or she believes the word was incorrectly marked. The onsite proctor has the final say. All requests for review must transpire before the round is concluded.
At the end of each round, correct word counts will be reported. In the case of a tie, an additional round(s) will transpire as needed.
