DISPELLING MISCONCEPTIONS

We are seeking teams of four to seven middle or high school students to develop an innovative video to correct a common misconception about biotech or medical science. Teams can focus on a variety of topics including scientific practices, new technologies, communications, drug research and development, production challenges, and drug approval practices.  Take a quick peek at the incredible prizes you can win!

Top 4 Finalists

Top 4 teams (2 high school teams/2 middle school teams) will be invited to submit an interview video. The 1st and 2nd places for each division will be announced at the Kenan Fellows Spring Institute.

THE CHALLENGE

Students will form small teams (4-7 students) to address a medical science or biotechnology area of concern. Teams can focus on a variety of topics including scientific practices, new technologies, communications, drug research and development, production challenges, and drug approval practices. 


Students will be required to 


Students will create a project overview, a project poster, and a 2-minute video. (Resources are provided on this website) 


Eligibility:


The BIOGEN Young Scientist Research Challenge is open to students who are enrolled in 6th through 12th grade in a public district or charter school located in Durham County, Johnston County, or Wake County, North Carolina. In order to be considered eligible, students must be currently enrolled at the time of entry and comply with these official rules.

JUDGING

You invest a lot of personal time and mental energy into making an award-winning research poster and video showcasing your team’s innovative solution. That’s why the  Kenan Fellows Young Scientists Research Challenge judges are carefully selected from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds including scientists, experts in communication, current and former teachers, and district administrators. In Round 1, judges score and rank entries based on the following criteria

In Round 2, the 2 highest scoring entrants will be deemed finalists. Finalists will submit their recorded answers to the interview questions.  The finalists' reflection will be evaluated based on the following criteria. The announcement and distribution of the 1st and 2nd Place Prize awards will be coordinated with the team's school administration in May/June.
