Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does our team have to have a teacher advisor?

A great question! No, your team does not have to have a teacher. Each team has to have members that are 6-8 grades (middle school division) or 9-12 grades (high school division), and each team must designate a point person. The point person can be a student on the team. All members have to have signed consent forms and image releases. Also all entrants must attend a traditional or charter school in Durham, Johnston, or Wake County.

2) How do we request a mentor?

SO glad you asked! Your team does not have to have a mentor from industry, but if you would like one to talk with about your ideas please fill out this form to request a mentor. You may request a mentor AFTER your team has completed the Project Overview: REQUEST A MENTOR HERE!

3) Can we use a video production group to create our video?

No, all research, video production, and poster design work must be created and produced by the student team. Adult mentors can give lessons on skills that are needed, but the actual work must be done by students.

4) Can students work alone?

No, the challenge was created to promote, encourage and teach collaboration skills. Challenge groups must consist of groups of 4-10 students.

5) How can a student find peers to work on a project with?

If you are an individual student looking for students to complete the project with, it is recommended that you ask a core subject teacher if there is a peer in another class that is interested in working on the project. It's also suggested that you inquire with science club advisors as well.

6) Can students work with students from another school?

Yes!
