In this assignment, I explored the relationship between design and ethnicity through research, synthesis and analysis as well as a personal reflection on my findings. In my project, I addressed the following: How has the practice and discipline of design been historically influenced by European designers, and in what ways is this changing today? How have we individually, in our own College, and at the University been shaped by these voices and how is that (or might that be) changing today and into the future?
The goal of this project was to research and create a promotional poster about an influential, though little known, designer or technological innovator.
I choose to look outside the College of Design for a hidden figure as well as a person of interest to me, Mathangi Arulpragasam, also known as M.I.A.
In addition to the sickness and death related to COVID-19, the pandemic has had additional significant negative effects, including vast unemployment, interruptions in supply chains, disruption to educational systems, child care and other day to day occurrences. At the same time, the pandemic has forced us to do many of the things Thackara advocates for in In the Bubble, including staying closer to home, slowing down, and finding alternatives to the way we “normally” do things. We can see the effects of some of this in air quality, noise and light pollution reduction, to name a few..
The goal of this team project was to brainstorm and research on one of NC States Sustainability Initiatives. My team and I choose to focus on Bee pollinators. Through observational and data-driven research, we explored the concept of sustainability in design practice of bee pollinators and human interaction.
In this assignment, I design a basic pilot test that highlights 2 of the ideas from Don Normans' Design of Everyday Things to test out the usability of Canva's interface and creates a digital journal that recorded my process. I choose Canva because I started using it a lot more during COVID-19. My goal with this test was to test Canvas flexibility for different users through its accessibility and downloading properties. I interviewed and tested 2 participants via zoom for observation purposes.
