When first introduced to Digital Citizenship, the thought was are you the type of person who would use the digital world in your daily lives, but that is not exactly correct. What I discovered about digital citizenship went far beyond simply having access to a digital device. It focuses on how to understand the ups and downs of the digital world, from hackers to cyberbullying, as well as how to prevent problems and identify when there is harm or spam.
It is difficult to explain digital citizenship when writing or even typing; thankfully, GPB "Digital Citizenship | Things Explained" provides a better visual representation of the true definition of digital citizenship, what it means to be one, the negatives and positives of being one, ways to prevent harm, safety precautions, and so on. Understanding more about the benefits and drawbacks, as well as safety precautions, can help you become a better digital citizen. There are also excellent programs and certifications available to help you learn more about digital citizenship and the resources that are available.
The importance of Digital Citizens is that they are made aware of the dangers of the internet and how safe they can be, as well as how vulnerable they can be to scams and hackers. For educators, it is critical to teach students about the dangers and dangers of the digital world. However, the students' safety and resources are available. Reasons for deciding to educate myself and learn more about digital citizenship, as well as learn useful resources to share with my future students. Below are great resources not only for you to use to further your understanding, but also for students, similar to what I would be using in my future classrooms.
Google Internland assisted in better understanding digital citizenship. It is an interactive game that teaches you about the importance of safety, how to identify spam and/or potential hackers, cyberbullying, and how to stop negative energy on the internet, among other things. Google Internet allowed me to learn more about the internet while also being interactive; it showed videos, had audio and subtitles, mazes, and even timers, all while teaching you a lot. Returning to digital citizenship, it emphasized the most important aspect of digital citizenship, which is safety. Throughout the majority of the game, safety and resources were also promoted, discussed, and demonstrated. Google Interland is a fantastic tool to use with your students and for yourself to not only have a fun way of learning, but also to teach and emphasize the importance of safety, have conversations, and learn about the dangers of the internet all while being interactive. Finally, you will be given a certificate similar to the one I received.
Further, the importance of teaching digital citizenship and safety, as well as providing resources, is important to teach in class, because today, anyone from the age of five to adulthood uses technology. Yes, knowing how to use a computer or the internet is understanding, but learning more can help prevent future people from being scammed or cyberbullied, and if not, finding solutions and knowing when and how to report. Teaching digital citizenship in your classroom promotes healthy friendships, internet safety, and awareness. As previously stated, some methods for teaching this include the ones mentioned above, ISTE videos, or an interactive game that not only educates students but also allows them to have hands-on experience and see the visual aspect.
In the end, digital citizenship taught me more safety precautions to take when accessing the internet, how to identify potential harm or scams in emails, how to research on Google, and how to understand and use interactive games and posters in my future classrooms. Recommending digital citizens to students and educators is something outside of education that everyone should have the opportunity to learn, understand, and interact with, and hopefully with more learning and spreading, this will allow more and more people to learn and hopefully prevent future internet problems.
