Where can the link for the Meta-Skill challenge contract be found?
The link to the contract can be found here. Participants are asked to fill out the form by the due date, but we will still accept contracts after the due date as long as the participants have enough time to finish the challenge.
What defines a skill that participants can learn?
Participants can and are welcome to learn any skills that they don’t have much experience in, are real skills (meaning that the results of them are not based on luck or anything else -- like becoming a stockbroker), include a set of techniques, and potentially can give results in the short amount of 20 hours of practicing them.
What are examples of skills that other villagers have worked on in the past?
Examples of skills that villagers have acquired as a part of Meta-Skill challenge in the past include but are not limited to learning how to skateboard, learning a new musical instrument (like Didgeridoo, Salamuri and Kalimba), learning calligraphy, learning how to pick a lock, and so on.
The Showcase references creating a video at the Showcase. I heard in the past, people presented live.
Ever since the pandemic, we are asking all students to create a video and submit that video here prior to the Showcase date rather than demonstrate it live. Given the judging format for the showcase, it is very difficult to demonstrate skills live and be judged effectively.
How do I create a professional quality video? I don't know if I have any of the right equipment and don't know where to start?
That's why we've partnered with the University Libraries and asked Jason Evans Groth, their Digital Media Librarian for assistance. Jason graciously has offered a workshop as well any personal help from him and his team to create video. Couldn't make the workshop, no worries, we were able to record it and have a informal copy from a past meeting here. Not sure how to record a video at home, reach out to the MetaSkill Challenge student-staff team or request a tech consultation any time with the NC State Libraries here: https://www.lib.ncsu.edu/tech-consultation.
How long should the presentation or video be?
Each presentation or video should be no more than 5 minutes in length with suggested length being between 3:30-5:00 minutes. This should ensure that you have enough time to demonstrate your skill, the process of learning acquisition, and your reflections to address all the questions/topics the judges will assess.
As I’m creating a video, what format should I use?
Students may record in whatever format they prefer but we require all students upload their videos to YouTube. Thus, it is wise to check whatever recording format is used can be easily converted to upload to YouTube. Students should upload videos as "unlisted" - this will make the video shareable at the Showcase but will not be visible to the public or show up in internet searches. YouTube has several built-in stabilization features and is easy to view and share at the Showcase.
What if the progress I achieved is less than I thought and I cannot do X? (Fill in blank for amazing skill/accomplishment related to skill)
Remember that the Meta-Skill Challenge is about learning a new skill and trying to learn in a new way. This is difficult and many skills take well over 20 hours to become proficient in, let alone good. The Meta-Skill Challenge Showcase reflects this progression. The Showcase is not a talent show. It is a way for students to demonstrate what and how they’ve learned. What you can demonstrate is only one piece of that - it’s also about the process and what you’ve learned.
Is attending the Meta-Skill Showcase mandatory?
We understand that some students may have classes or other prior commitments during the showcase and cannot attend, though we hope most of you can attend. That being said, completing the challenge does not require attendance. So, the short answer is no. You can just submit a video of you explaining your journey of learning your Meta-Skill as well as showing your skill in action. However, as mentioned, we highly encourage all of the participants to attend the showcase if possible. This way you can learn more about other students' skills, their struggles, and how they overcame them, and learn about different challenges that one might face when learning a specific skill, and different perspectives on how to solve those problems.
Can I really receive a High Impact Experience Credit for the Meta-Skill Challenge?
That is correct! Any student who completes the 20-hour commitment of the Meta-Skill Challenge and the accompanying short reflection will receive credit for one of their High Impact Experiences. While we encourage all of you to submit a video to the showcase to win our prizes, the showcase is not required to receive High Impact Experience credit, though presenting at the Showcase may waive the written reflection requirement.
If I am a student-employee, can I still win prizes?
Short answer: Yes! Long answer: Funding for many of the prizes comes from different areas of campus. Students employed by DASA cannot receive prizes from DASA but can win prizes (the same prizes) that our Library partners may be offering.
