The Pizza Box Composting Project is a partnership between NC State’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Office and University Housing.
Organic waste (like pizza boxes) collected on campus is processed at the Compost Facility and Research Cooperative. There it is turned into a nutrient-rich soil mixture that is used in campus landscapes and at NC State’s Agroecology Education Farm, which grows 9,000 pounds of produce annually for NC State Dining.
NC State typically diverts more than 350 tons of waste from dining facilities each year, keeping it out of the landfill. Through the Pizza Box Composting project, students directly make an impact on the diversion of waste and will allow NC State to scale the program throughout campus.
As compost collection expands on campus, additional processing capacity can be added to the facility in order to help NC State meet its 70% waste diversion goal as outlined in the 2017-2022 NC State Sustainability Strategic Plan.
