The Paleo3 research group at North Carolina State University is accepting applications for MS and PhD-level graduate positions, as part of an interdisciplinary team working on either:
1) Quaternary paleoecology reconstructions in the Southeastern United States, focusing specifically on Holocene vegetation change in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont regions of the Carolinas. The work will involve Quaternary stratigraphy, developing geochronologies for recent sediments, conducting micropaleontology and isotope geochemistry analyses, and presenting and publishing the resulting discoveries.
2) Paleoclimate reconstructions of the Cretaceous Thermal Maximum (KTM), focused on interhemispheric comparisons between the Western Interior Basin of North America and the Eastern Gobi Basin of Mongolia. The work will involve stratigraphy and pedology in the Eastern Gobi, conducting isotope geochemistry analyses of these and fossil materials, and presenting and publishing the resulting discoveries.
Applicants should have a BS/BA or MS in geology, biology, or a related discipline, and experience with paleontology, sedimentology, or geochemistry research is preferred. Applicants are encouraged to contact the PI (Dr. Ethan Hyland, ehyland@ncsu.edu) to express interest prior to applying or with any questions. Applications for graduate positions should be submitted to the Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences via the NCSU graduate application portal: https://meas.sciences.ncsu.edu/graduate/apply-to-meas/. Positions include a competitive stipend, tuition waiver, and medical benefits. Application deadline is Jan. 31 for Fall 2026.
