I graduated from North Carolina State Universities Passport to Success Program in the Spring of 2023. This program allowed me to enrich my educational experience and prepare me further for graduation and my future career. Some of my experiences can be viewed below.
I enjoyed listening to North Carolina Principal of the year, Kisha Clemons. Mrs. Clemons discussed her educational journey and where she currently works at Shuford Elementary School. We were able to ask her questions and get her insight on education. Although this was a virtual webinar, I took a lot away from the experience! (I am in the bottom right corner of this picture!)
Dr. Whitney White gave a powerful message about the idea of poverty, equity, trauma, and real-world scenarios one could possibly face as a classroom teacher. We broke into small breakout rooms to discuss definitions of those terms, how one can best advocate for children in poverty, and much more! This is a webinar that I will remember for the rest of my educational experience.
Jeremy Lea, a partner with the college of education gave an intriguing lesson on communication styles and the importance behind understanding them. Personal communication styles affect how you work in your personal and professional life and Lea encouraged that we better understand them.
Prior to the meeting, we were told to fill out a self assessment and were determined to either be a Driver, Expressive, Amiable or Analytical. Such a fun and informative zoom meeting!
In early March of 2020, I had the privilege of attending the National Youth at Risk Conference. This conference discussed equity vs. equality, racism, poverty, amplifying black voices, and so much more. This was hands-down the most interactive and benefical conference that I have ever experienced.
At the National FFA Conference, I, along with my teammates, Michael Palko and Rachel Smith, competed in the Marketing Plan competition. Since we placed first in North Carolina, we were moved on to the next round: nationals in Indiana! Competing at Nationals meant that the competition would be more intense and much more preparation needed. Although we only made it to the semifinals, we had such a fun time and got to experience a fantastic opportunity!
I was given the opportunity to present my poster, "Let's Be The Last Straw," at the National FFA Conference. Since I placed first at the state level, I moved on to the next round. My presentation focused on the idea of plastic straws and the harm they do to the environment. I am pictured to the left in my Millbrook jacket.
