Melanie Winstead

Animal Science Major | Zoology Major | Leadership Development Mentor

Hello,

My name is Melanie Winstead. I am currently a sophomore at North Carolina State University (NCSU) pursuing a bachelor's degree in Animal Science with a concentration in Veterinary Bioscience, along with a bachelors in Zoology.  I also have already received an associate degree in science and art from Beaufort County Early College Highschool (BCECHS).

I grew up in the small town of Washington in North Carolina where I was accepted into my first Veterinarian Assistant job. From that point on I knew I wanted to pursue a career in Veterinary Medicine. I'm currently uncertain whether I would rather work with companion animals or more large-scale zoo animals, but I am certain my goals in life are to improve the lives of some animal species.

My primary extracurricular activities include softball. I played for approximately 12 years. And was also given the opportunity to coach a 6U team for a year, and assistant coach for a season. While attending NCSU I was a member of the Animal Science Club, Zoology Club, Duck club, and College Mentor for Kids Inc.  I was also a teacher's assistant and led tutoring sessions while attending my education at BCECHS.

I have had the opportunity to go abroad over the summer, to Thailand, to work with other veterinarians and take part in many volunteer activities.  The group each took turns organizing activities throughout the day and planning different service activities and practicing leadership skills.  While at NCSU, I also have been a part of the Shelton Leadership Development Program, where we explore our different leadership styles and participate in different mentor and mentee activities.  Each month we were responsible for scheduling and organizing times to meet with our mentee to discuss the semester and answer any questions they may have.  We also discussed our different leadership goals, core values, and what we wish to accomplish in our leadership journey.  We do this through seminars, planning trips, mentoring, and service activities.
