Description: "Sue Aldworth, Carol Williams, and I worked together on a trio of posts. We decided on a variety of patterns and then painted them in a random order on all of the posts so the patterns would be offset when installed side-by-side." - Laurie Cochran
Inspiration: Cochran wrote that "The colors and patterns on the Alebrije animals and Mexican folk art inspired the patterns. We also decided near the end of the process to each design and paint four animals in the Alebrije style, one on each side of the post, in small sections with a magenta background."
Challenges: Cochran wrote that "Since we each were responsible for certain patterns on all of the posts, the most challenging part for me was transporting posts to and from our group workspace and my house between work sessions.
"We were frequently asking, 'Which post do I have this week?' For a while, all of the posts were in my garage."
Additional Information:
"The toppers are dried bottle gourds that I already had. My husband, Connie, built us some tiered caps as bases for the gourds. Then, we painted coordinating patterns for the gourds and the bottommost sections of the posts. This led us to our title - Gourdgeous!"
"We are indebted to Deb Lackey, who used her woodworking skills to make routed grooves on our posts, giving us clear dividing lines for the patterns." - Laurie Cochran.
