The PrimaryAI project originates from one primary question: How can we draw from children’s conceptions and ideas to teach AI concepts? In this context, we have been engaging children alongside a cohort of teacher co-designers to investigate deeply engaging learning experiences integrating artificial intelligence and life science for upper elementary students with immersive problem-based learning. By leveraging an iterative design, development, and refinement process, we integrate AI-science curriculum and immersive problem-based learning to introduce AI concepts and ethics into upper elementary science classrooms. PrimaryAI enables students to collaboratively learn about AI by engaging in problem solving in which they investigate science problems using AI tools designed specifically to support upper elementary students in inquiry-based science adventures.
