Teaching Roundtables.  This series was created in 2022 by me and Lara Pacifici as a forum for faculty and staff to share opportunities, challenges, and ideas around teaching.  The sessions are informal, interactive, and varied in perspective.

OnLine Learning at the Collage of Natural Resources. During the 2020 pandemic, I coordinated training for online learning within the College of Natural Resources.  I developed a centralized repository of training opportunities and also organized numerous training sessions by reaching out to people in the College and Univeristy with expertise in various aspects of online learning.  The CNR OnLine Learning website was the portal to all of these opportunities; I am continuing to curate this site during the Spring 2021 semester.

#UnGrading.  During the 2020 pandemic, I used an #UnGrading approach in my Conservation Biology in Practice course.  Students and I co-developed evaluation criteria that each student applied to themself to suggest and defend a final grade.  With 40 students in the class, there were only 2 contentious grades.  I expect to continue working with this approach as it seems to increase student motivation and creativity, increase student focus on making adjustments in response to feedback, and lead to stronger student involvement.  All of these changes are suggested by research on alternative approaches to grading and evaluation.

Conserving Urban Biodiversity is a graduate special topics course created by me and Jan Thompson (Iowa State University) that has been offered during Spring 2015 (Pima County), 2016 (Chicago Wilderness), 2017 (Boulder), 2019 (Jacksonville, FL)., Triangle Region (2023), San Diego (2025).  In this course, we recruit 6 graduate students from each university representing a variety of disciplines including biological conservation, ecology, economics, landscape architecture, and urban planning to examine the challenge of conserving biological diversity in urbanizing regions.  Our approach is to study basic principles through a different case study each year, to travel during spring break to the area we're studying each year, and to develop some kind of product documenting the challenges and approaches to conservation taken in the study area.

Conservation Biology in Practice. Lara Pacifici and I co-teach this course (2014-2016). We developed a Controversies in Conservation seminar series as part of the course. Each semester the students lead three seminars on controversial topics in the field of conservation biology. For example, during the Spring 2015 semester we had seminars on "Killing for Conservation?", "Beach Driving at Cape Hatteras National Seashore", and "Wildlife Trafficking & Indigenous People."  The seminars occur during class time and are advertised campus-wide. During its run, the series is becoming recognized as a forum for open discussion of controversial ideas and is attracting an increasing number of campus-wide participants.  Turned course over to Dr Ivana Mali in 2023.

Natural Resources Honors Experience (2012-2017) is a 2-credit undergraduate offering created by Barry Goldfarb and me during the Fall 2012 semester. During exit interviews, our more advanced students have suggested a course that allows them to explore topics in natural resources in greater depth than they experience in most courses, and provides opportunities to develop their leadership and collaboration skills. We designed this course to include upperclassmen and incoming students in a roughly 1:2 ratio; the intent is for mentorship relationships to develop between the older and younger students. Students conceive, initiate, and complete small team projects, as well as readings and discussions about topics of interest.  Course offered until Goldfarb retired; unable to recruit a partner to continue. 

Conservation Biology in Practice is a new undergraduate course I created with Shari Rodriguez, a Preparing the Professoriate student, and first offered during the Spring 2012 semester. We developed a highly engaged and interactive environment with a service-learning component. During the first offering, we collaborated with Nils Peterson's Human Dimensions of Wildlife course to examine how greenway users experienced wildlife. Lara Paacific and I modified it heavily during the Fall 2013 semester, based on student input from the first offering with Shari, and now offer the course every Spring semester. 

Teamwork Bootcamp was a short course that I developed with Gary Blank and Shari Rodriguez. Our students often need to work on teams, both during their time at NC State and in their professional careers; yet, they are not taught these skills. We adapted the teamwork activities I developed for my Natural Resources Measurements course to create this 5-week standalone version. Although the first offering in 2011 was successful, it attracted limited enrollment; no students enrolled in 2012. Rather than develop this as a standalone course, we are going to integrate it into our Natural Resources Honor Experience.. 

Sustainable Use of Natural Resources is a 4-week summer course that is a collaborative offering of NC State University, Purdue University, and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Through a combination of class sessions and guided tours, students grapple with natural resources issues in North America (even years) and Europe (odd years). I have increased my participation in this course since 2010, largely providing leadership for the topics of teamwork, collaboration, and the sustainability and conservation of natural resources in sub/urban settings. I also create and maintain the course web site each year. 

• 2010 :: Maritime Provinces, Canada - I spent 1 week to learn how the course operates and provide guidance on incorporating a service-learning aspect. 

• 2011 :: Sweden, Finland, Estonia - I participated during the first 2 weeks of the course to develop lessons on teamwork, collaboration, and urban sustainability. 

• 2012 :: US Pacific Northwest - I participated for the full 4 weeks, providing lessons on teamwork, collaboration, and urban sustainability. I also arranged the segments of the tour dealing with issues of urban conservation and sustainability. 

• 2013 :: Sweden, Germany, Poland - I participated for the full 4 weeks, providing lessons on teamwork, collaboration, and urban sustainability. I also arranged the segments of the tour dealing with issues of urban conservation and sustainability. 

• 2016 :: Canadian & US Pacific Northwest - I participated for 1.5 weeks, providing lessons on teamwork, collaboration, and urban sustainability. Arranged Vancouver, BC, portion of tour dealing with issues of urban conservation and sustainability initiatives. 

• 2017 :: Sweden, Germany, Czech Republic - I participated for the full 4 weeks, providing lessons on teamwork, collaboration, and urban sustainability. 

• 2018 :: Canadian & US Pacific Northwest - I participated for the full 4 weeks, providing lessons on teamwork, collaboration, and urban sustainability. Arranged Vancouver, BC, Hood River, OR, & Bend, OR, portions of tour dealing with issues of urban conservation and sustainability initiatives. 

Collaborative Research Special Topics Courses. In these courses, I work with 5-10 graduate students on a collaborative research effort. The multidisciplnary teams work together to develop and address an original research question and produce tangible products, such as peer-reviewed journal articles and oral and poster presentations for professional conferences. This inquiry-guided teaching approach is described in Hess & Drew (2004). 

• 1996 :: Ecology and Economics of Clearcutting was my first attempt at this approach to teaching, and was not entirely successful. It was an experimental graduate course to evaluate a use of the Web for cross-disciplinary distance learning. Produced a university report, a conference paper (Hess et al. 1998), and a book chapter (Serow et al. 1998) based on this work. 

• 2001 :: Measuring Suburban Sprawl was built on the lessons I learned in "Ecology and Economics of Clearcutting" and further examination on how to build such a course. Nine graduate students, several faculty, and I worked collaboratively to define and measure quanitatively suburban sprawl. We produced a manuscript that was published in Carolina Planning and presented our work at the Landscape Ecology conference and an Environmental Protection Agency meeting. Results published in Hess et al. 2001. 

• 2002 :: Focal Species Conservation Planning :: Seven graduate students and I mapped focal species habitat for the Triangle region of North Carolina. We produced a poster for the Landscape Ecology conference. 

• 2003 :: Surrogate Species Conservation Planning :: Five graduate students and I evaluated the effectiveness of surrogate species planning through a detailed literature review; and compared three approaches to wildlife planning in the Triangle Region of North Carolina. We produced two peer-reviewed papers (Hess, Koch et al. 2006; Favreau et al. 2006) documenting our work, and presented our work at more than six meetings. 

• 2004 :: Regional Biodiversity Priorities Five students and I collaborated with Taylor Rickets (World Wildlife Fund's Conservation Sciences Program) to evaluate the effectiveness of indicator taxa approaches as the grain and extent of application varies. We produced a paper (Hess, Bartel et al. 2006) and presented our work at several conferences. 

• 2005 :: Examining Biodiversity Patterns :: Three students (which I decided was too few) and I collaborated with Taylor Rickets (World Wildlife Fund's Conservation Sciences Program) to determine if levels of agriculultural and urban development could be used to identify conservation areas at multiple scales. Results were confounded and we did not produce a product. 

• 2006 :: Creating Open Space Plans that Work :: Toddi Steelman and I led nine students in an examination of the relationship between the quality of open space plans and success in protecting open space. We focused on plans and programs in the six-county Triangle Region of North Carolina. Based on an examination of 22 plans and programs, we found that plan quality is not predictive of success in protecting open space. Stakeholder involvement in planning and implementation was weakly predicitive of success in protecting open space. 

• 2007 :: Where is Conservation Science in Local Planning? :: Toddi Steelman and I worked with faculty from two other universities and led 26 graduate students in an examination of the role of conservation science in local (municipal, county, tribal) land use planning. We worked in three regions across the country and produced two published papers based on our work (Miller et al. 2009; Thompson et al. 2009). Supported by an NCSU-DELTA grant (Hess & Steelman 2006). 

• 2008 :: Measuring Conservation Success :: Nine students (8 graduate, 1 undergraduate) and I worked with Triangle Land Conservancy to begin designing a program to measure ecologically the success of the Conservancy's land protection efforts. Alexander & Hess (2012) was an outgrowth of this effort. 

• 2010 :: State of the Triangle's Environment, 2010 :: Worked with Triangle Land Conservancy to develop a State of Environment report for the Triangle Region. The report reflects the four public benefits on which Triangle Land Conservancy focuses: Wildlife Habitat, Clean Water, Local Farms and Food, and Connecting People with Nature. Instead of a printed document, we created a State of Environment wiki as a community-owned resource documenting environmental conditions in the Triangle. 

• 2010 :: Triangle Ecosystem Services :: Collaborated with World Wildlife Fund to use the InVEST ecosystem services model to evaluate ecosystem services in the Falls Lake basin. 

• 2015 :: Urban Biodiversity Conservation :: Developed and first offered in 2015 with Jan Thompson at Iowa State University, we plan to run this course jointly for 4-5 years. Each year, students from the two Universities will learn basic concepts of conservation in sub/urban settings and carry out collaborative research on a case study city: Tucson/Pima County (2015); Chicago Wilderness (2016); Boulder Open Space (2017); Jacksonville, FL ( 2019). At the end of the 4-5-year period, we will have some product (book, website, etc) in which we examine how successful conservation occurs in US sub/urban contexts.

Natural Resources Measurements is an undergraduate course that I have taught every spring since 1997. I have introduced numerous teaching innovations through time and the course is currently taught using a service-learning approach with a heavy emphasis on professional development.  See the 

• 1997 :: Established a client-consultant relationship between NR 300 and a landscape architecture course. Acting as clients, students in the landscape course generated project requirements and information requests. Students in NR 300, acting as consultants, provided technical information. Produced a university report describing the results. 

• 2000 :: Revamped course to take advantage of computers in the classroom. Students worked in small teams (2-3 people) to solve problems using computers during the "lecture" portion of the course. This approach allowed me to present concepts and then immediately put them into practice using more realistic problem sets. Worked with Heather Cheshire to integrate geographic information systems, global positioning systems, and statistical sampling into a lecture and laboratory sequence. Cheshire and I published a paper in the Journal of Forestry about our GIS work. (Hess & Cheshire 2002) 

• 2001 :: Improved writing and speaking assignments in class by increasing the amount of guidance available to the students. This effort was the result of a writing and speaking workshop I participated in during the semester. [ Incorporated permanently. ] 

• 2001 :: Incorporated reading of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People into the course, along with associated writing assignments. This professional development opportunity is intended to help students learn to think about long term goals, collaborate, and develop leadership qualities. 

• 2004 :: The entire class (14 students) worked on a single collaborative project to estimate the amount of impervious surface in Wake County. This approach help students develop collaboration and leadership skills. Results were presented in an open seminar. 

• 2004 :: Obtained a grant from NCSU's Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning (Hess 2003) to help improve students' statistical intuition using a set of visualization modules that a graduate student and I developed.

• 2005 :: Built the class around a service-learning project. Students worked with the Wake County Environmental Services Department and estimated the amount of impervious surface in the Falls Lake water supply watershed, from 1970-1999. ( See 2005 project page for reports ) 

• 2006 :: Service-learning project with Wake County Environmental Services Department to examine the change in runoff resulting from proposed changes in regulations. ( See 2006 project page for reports ) 

• 2007 :: Service-learning project with Raleigh Stormwater Department to evaluate a method for rating stream bank erosion. ( See 2007 project page for reports ) 

• 2008 :: Service-learning project with Raleigh Parks, NC Division of Forest Resources, and the USDA Forest Service to assess the ecological value of Raleigh's urban forest. ( See 2008 project page for reports ) Also published description of first-day exercise in which students are asked to estimate the number of blades of grass in a large field as an introduction to various aspects of the course. (Hess & Keto 2009) 

• 2009 :: Service-learning project with Triangle Land Conservancy to evaluate several measures of conservation success.  Abandonded because students were not performing; taught in a more traditional manner.

• 2010 :: Developed "Teamwork Bootcamp" during first three weeks of course to bring together a number of exercises intended to improve ability of students to work in teams. I also compressed reading of Seven Habits into a 4-week period and reduced the number of essays to one per major section (four total), with a critical thinking evaluation rubric. Service-learning project with Wake County Parks, Recreation, & Open Space - we performed an inventory of the Futrell Tract in Cary, NC. ( See 2010 project page for reports ) 

• 2011 :: Service-learning project with Wake County Parks, Recreation, & Open Space - we performed an inventory of the Rust Property, Garner, NC. Began experimenting with the integration of Google Earth and Picasa Web Albums to produce richer, more descriptive products. This led to submission of a grant proposal to link Google Maps, Picasa Web Albums, textual reports, and raw data (submitted May 2011). ( See 2011 project page for reports )

Modeling Biological Systems 

• 1997 :: Held a professional poster session at the end of the semester at which students displayed results of their modeling projects. The session was attended by people from the larger university community. A peer-reviewed paper summarizing the implementation of the session and an evaluation of the results was published. (Hess & Brooks 1998) 

• 2003 :: I redesigned the course and, for the first time, offered it for distance education. Sixteen students took the face-to-face version and four took the distance education version. I redesigned the course to include more hands-on work in class based on modeling case studies. This allowed the students to conceive, build, run, and analyze a model during the first few weeks of the course. From student comments and the quality of their final products, it seems the approach was successful for both the face-to-face and distance education students. 

• 2005 :: Taught as part of a distance education pilot program using a synchronous teaching system called Centra. Seven students took the course at a distance and are in the virtual classroom at the same time as the 17 students are in the face-to-face class in Raleigh. The software allows students at a distance to see my desktop while I talk about what I'm doing. I have a whiteboard, can show PowerPoint presentations (which I rarely do), hold discussion sessions, send students to virutal breakout rooms, and see and control individual student desktops. Students can be made copresenters and talk to everyone in the class.

Landscape Ecology (2002). A full-semester graduate course to introduce students to the concepts and application of landscape ecology. 

Effective Scientific Posters (2000).  Five-week course developed to help graduate students learn to create effective scientific poster presentations. In conjunction with the first offering of this course, worked with Leon Leigel (USDA Forest Service) to create a web site offering guidance for Creating Effective Posters. [ Course discontinued and move to an on-line resource. ]
