Gabrielle Graeter is a Conservation Biologist and Herpetologist with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, based out of Asheville. Gabrielle is originally from the mountains of North Carolina and a proud NCSSM graduate. After NCSSM, she went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned a B.S. in Biology. After a couple of years of leading outdoor adventure trips, environmental education, and working as a Biological Technician with the US Forest Service, she headed back to school to get a M.S. in Ecology from the University of Georgia’s Odum School of Ecology, where she studied the effects of landscape fragmentation on reptiles and amphibians.
Gabrielle’s current work involves studying the reptiles of western North Carolina to better understand their distribution and determine their population status. The focus is on population monitoring, assessing threats, and taking action to help priority species. Gabrielle has worked in mountain bogs and with reptiles for 18 years. She spends a lot of time with the Federally Threatened bog turtle, and a lot of time in the wetlands—mountain bogs – that the species inhabits. In addition to her work with turtles, snakes, and lizards, she also restores habitat, protects land, builds relationships with private landowners to improve conservation, and collaborates with a multitude of conservation partners.
Gabrielle is not in this work for the accolades or the money, but for the satisfaction of knowing she is making a real difference for conservation in the beautiful and biodiverse mountains of North Carolina. Her accomplishments include earning the prestigious Conservation Hero Award from Southeast Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation in 2022, serving as a chair and committee member for multiple conservation groups, spreading the word about these conservation efforts through various media, numerous scientific publications, and mentoring the next generation of conservation biologists.
