Understanding Assessments
mCLASS is a universal screener that measures the development of reading skills through Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS). Our students are assessed at the beginning, middle and end of the year. Based on the data received, teachers determine and provide needed interventions and progress monitor to measure the student's rate of improvement.
We use an online learning program from Edmentum called Exact Path. Students receive personalized learning in both reading and math. Beginning, middle and end of the year assessments are given to K-5 students. This program is computer adaptive and targets a student's strengths and weaknesses. After the first assessment, lessons, practice and short quizzes are prescribed according to each student's level. Teachers can also assigned specific learning activities to reinforce skills as needed. Students can earn rewards and monitor their own learning.
At the end of the school year, all students in grades 3 - 5 are required to take summative assessments in reading and math. Science is only tested in the 5th grade. These assessments measure a student's mastery of the NC state standards for their grade level, which has been the instructional focus throughout the year.
ENCASE is a benchmark assessment and is given 3 times during the academic year. The data from these snapshot assessments is used to guide instruction.
For K-2nd grade, students' math skills are measured with various tasks which are based on the NC state standards for their grade level.
The following tabs are linked to the NC DPI standards unpacking documents. The “unpacking” of the standards done in these documents is an effort to answer a simple question “What does this standard mean that a student must know and be able to do?” and to ensure the description is helpful, specific and comprehensive for educators.
