Explicit Systematic Phonics Instruction
In Kindergarten: Students start to blend, segment, and learn first digraphs with the engaging Letterland spelling stories. Introduce high-frequency words and check progress with the integrated assessment strand.
In 1st Grade: The focus is on word families, digraphs, prefixes, suffixes, and fluency. The multi-sensory approach to learning is continued and students are encouraged to learn special tricks to improve fluency and ensure mastery of many more digraphs and trigraphs.
In 2nd Grade: Students will learn more advanced spelling patterns, syllabification, and word structure. The program incorporates many reading and fluency activities, as well as motivational word games.
In 3rd Grade: Students grow in word knowledge by building on previous learning in phonics, spelling, and word structure and applying that knowledge to learning more sophisticated words that occur in academic subjects across the curriculum, fostering a greater interest in words and language.
The Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum is designed to work alongside Letterland and is a fast and fun way to build up phonological skills. It provides students with consistent and repeated instruction, and this transfers to developing a student's decoding and encoding skills. All students participate in the lessons as part of the Tier 1 instruction in kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade classrooms. Our 3rd grade uses the next level called "Bridge the Gap."
With this curriculum, students read authentic, complex texts while practicing reading, writing, speaking and listening, and vocabulary. These are woven together to help students increase their knowledge of the world around them. Every module is built around a topic essential for building knowledge, empowering students to engage with complex texts.
Eureka Math focuses on key concepts that layer over time, creating enduring knowledge. Students gain a complete body of math knowledge, not just a discrete set of skills. They use the same models and problem-solving methods from grade to grade, so math concepts stay with them, year after year.
