Ms. Reed

This year at a glance

In grade 7, students continue to sharpen their literacy skills as they read, view, and listen to a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts. The language arts curriculum also exposes students to works of art, music, and film that reflect a focus or theme of study. This extends their knowledge and understanding and provides insight into the human experience. Students read closely for a deeper interpretation and become more articulate as they write and speak to analyze and synthesize between texts. Students utilize the writing process to craft responses to literature, argument scripts, speeches, personal narratives, and reflective essays. They become independent, efficient researchers and use multi-media platforms to present their findings. There is a strong emphasis on public speaking, and students actively learn from one another and adjust their thinking as they synthesize new information.

Who is Ms. Reed?

I received a B.A. in English from Holy Cross College, and an M.Sc. in Modern Literature from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. After working in marketing and public relations, I earned my M.A. in Teaching English from Teachers College at Columbia University. I taught high school English in Manhattan before taking several years off to raise my children, both of whom graduated from Saxe. In 2015 I began teaching seventh grade LA at Saxe, and I am very happy to be back to a profession I love.

My husband and I are board members of The Children's Fund for Glycogen Disease Research and we were Fresh Air Fund hosts for many years. I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, running, walking my dog, yoga, and traveling.
