Second Step gives kids a three-step process to keep themselves safe when faced with unsafe situations:
1) Recognize: Ask yourself "Is it safe? What's the rule?
2) Refuse: Say words that mean no or just leave.
3) Report: Tell an adult you trust so they can help keep everyone safe.
As students get older, they take more responsibility for their own safety. In the Second Step Child Safety Unit, they learn skills and rules—such as the Ways to Stay Safe and the Always Ask First Rule—to help them keep themselves safe. The Safety Cards expand on the lessons and provide students additional information to keep themselves safe.
