Work Based Learning

For over 50 years, the Sabin-Schellenberg Professional Technical Center has offered the students of North Clackamas School District the chance to explore career-related electives. One key element for many programs here at SSC is the opportunity for students to expand their knowledge base through participation in one of many student-operated businesses or hands-on program application. Our students expand their culinary expertise in the Sabin student deli & catering opportunities; business, marketing, and management skills in the Bizmart student store; customer service professionalism through our digital design program or in our cosmetology salon and automotive services shop. Other opportunities abound; whether observing Early Childhood Education in our on-site preschool; fabricating parts in Manufacturing Engineering, interning in a hospital to get a first-hand look at the practice of medicine in action; raising farm animals -- on a working farm; or scaling a forest of trees while studying our eco-system. In 2020 the state of Oregon renewed its focus on these Work Based Learning opportunities as it recognizes these opportunities support students in identifying educational and career goals. These experiences provide opportunities for sustained interactions with industry or community professionals that foster in-depth, firsthand experience of the expectations and application of knowledge and skills required in a given career field. The access to social networks and connections that work-based learning provides to learners has the potential to open doors and opportunities that are not available through classroom education alone.

Much of the success of the Sabin-Schellenberg Professional Technical Center depends on our partnerships in the broader community and the businesses that help our community thrive. As we continue to foster community awareness, we invite you to join our growing list of ongoing business-education partnerships by participating as program advisory committee members, volunteers in our classrooms, or providing opportunities for student internships. Philanthropic contributions can transform the lives of Sabin-Schellenberg students as well, through scholarships, leadership opportunities, and classroom learning with state of the art technology.
