First check out this amazing YouTube video of 72 instruments made from recycled materials from around your house. This guy made some really cool stuff! He put electronics into a lot of it so his instruments could be played through an amplifier so it sounds louder, he can add distortion, etc. (that part will be too hard so don't expect to make an electronic instrument). www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TPkDPJmoA8
Now that you have some inspiration, the first thing you should decide when imagining your instrument is the type of sound you want it to make. For example, would you like it to make a rattle sound, or a strumming sound, or a flute like sound etc.? After you have decided what kind of sound you are looking for, look around your house for materials that might make that sound. Follow the steps below to create your original musical instrument. When you are happy with the instrument you’ve created, send me a recording. I cannot wait to see what you come up with!
DAY 1: GATHER
Gather up materials that you could use for your instrument. Some suggestions are:
Empty bottles (or partly full with water but be careful not to spill!)
Beans, rice, pebbles, beads, or other really small objects
Rubber bands, wire, or similar objects for making strings
Paper or plastic tubes
Paper clips
Metal pots
Paper plates
DAY 2: ASSEMBLE
Put your instrument together. You may need glue, staples, zip ties, tape, etc. to hold pieces in place depending on what you are trying to make.
DAY 3: ADJUST
Try your instrument out and see how you like it. Does it make the sounds you were expecting? Make any needed changes to it until you get the sound you want. Can it make more than one type of sound? Try your instrument in different ways!
DAY 4: COMPOSE
Create a short piece of music with your new instrument. Give your piece a beginning, middle, and ending. Practice it a few times until you've got your piece memorized.
DAY 5: PERFORM AND SHARE
Make a video of your musical composition on your new instrument! Perform it for your family, pet, etc. Send your video to Mr. Noyes: noyesd@nclack.k12.or.us
