I am so excited to be the School Counselor for all grade levels at Beatrice Morrow Cannady Elementary School. I am looking forward to an excellent year of community building, collaboration, and learning as we all strive to become the best versions of ourselves. I graduated with a Master’s degree in Counselor Education from Portland State University and have an Oregon School Counseling License that permits me work with students K-12. In addition, I have a background in social work, case-management, and behavior consultation.
I am very passionate about the arts and truly believe that they have an incredible way of building bridges, bringing people together, and opening our minds to what could not be expressed by words alone. In my spare time I enjoy acting, anything musical, spending time with my dog, and getting myself out into nature hiking, camping, exploring, and creating new memories.
I believe that the role of the School Counselor extends far beyond the purview of the school and the furtherance of academic achievement. Students are complex and unique. Each and every one of them has something special to offer. It is my responsibility, as a counselor, to better understand their individual experiences and support them in ways that are meaningful and beneficial to their social and emotional well-being. I view students through a trauma-informed lens and work from a strengths-based, person-centered approach. That means that I see them as a whole person and as so much more than the issues they may be struggling with. Because the way we think impacts our actions, I believe it is important to discover and recognize the stories and beliefs we have about ourselves. I work closely with students in creative ways to help them identify their personal strengths as well as to create and narrate their own stories.
Some students may benefit from short-term individual counseling regarding academic, social, or emotional challenges. Referrals can be made by parent/guardian or teacher by clicking HERE or contacting me directly. Students may also self-refer to meet with me by filling out a "Let's Talk" slip, which can be found on my classroom door.
*Please note that some challenges are beyond the purview of the School Counselor and may benefit from the support of a Licenced Professional Counselor. If you are looking for additional resources in the area, you can find a non-comprehensive list HERE.
A variety of small groups are offered to students who may benefit from spending some extra time developing academic, social and/or emotional skills, and to students who are coping with similar life situations. Small groups typically meet once per week for six to eight sessions and vary throughout the year depending on student need. If you are interested in having your child participate in a specific small counseling group this school year, referrals can be made by clicking HERE or by contacting me directly.
Group topics may include:
Friendship Skills
Emotional Regulation
Anxiety/Worry
Social Skills
Family Transitions
Grief/Loss
Visiting each classroom multiple times throughout the school year gives me the opportunity to interact with every student in the school. I teach lessons that are typically 15-30 minutes in length and cover topics such as school readiness skills, understanding feelings of self and others, problem solving skills, bullying prevention, personal safety, and more.
