Hello! My name is Chad Craner and I am very happy to be the School Counselor for all students at Beatrice Morrow Cannady Elementary School. I am excited for a wonderful school year of community, teamwork, and learning as we all work to be our best selves.
I have a Master’s degree in Counselor Education from Portland State University. I also have an Oregon School Counseling License that allows me to work with students from kindergarten through 12th grade. I have also worked in social work, case management, and behavior support.
I love the arts—music, acting, and creative activities. I believe art can bring people together, build understanding, and express feelings we cannot say with words. In my free time I enjoy acting, music, spending time with my dog, and being outdoors hiking, camping, and exploring nature.
As a School Counselor, I believe my job is more than helping students with schoolwork. I know each student is unique and special. My goal is to understand their life experiences and support their social and emotional health. I work with a strengths-based approach, which means I look at each student as a whole person, not just their problems. I help students find their own strengths and build positive stories about themselves.
Some students may benefit from short-term individual counseling regarding academic, social, or emotional challenges. Referrals can be made by parent/guardian or teacher by clicking HERE or contacting me directly. Students may also self-refer to meet with me by filling out a "Let's Talk" slip, which can be found on my classroom door.
*Please note that some challenges are beyond the purview of the School Counselor and may benefit from the support of a Licenced Professional Counselor. If you are looking for additional resources in the area, you can find a non-comprehensive list HERE.
A variety of small groups are offered to students who may benefit from spending some extra time developing academic, social and/or emotional skills, and to students who are coping with similar life situations. Small groups typically meet once per week for six to eight sessions and vary throughout the year depending on student need. If you are interested in having your child participate in a specific small counseling group this school year, referrals can be made by clicking HERE or by contacting me directly.
Group topics may include:
Friendship Skills
Emotional Regulation
Anxiety/Worry
Social Skills
Family Transitions
Grief/Loss
Visiting each classroom multiple times throughout the school year gives me the opportunity to interact with every student in the school. I teach lessons that are typically 15-30 minutes in length and cover topics such as school readiness skills, understanding feelings of self and others, problem solving skills, bullying prevention, personal safety, and more.
