La Sfera Challenge I: May 22-June 5, 2020
La Sfera Challenge I, which took place between May 22 and June 5, 2020, was a two-week competition pitting international teams of scholars against each other in a race to transcribe three different copies of one text, Goro Dati's fifteenth-century geographic treatise, La Sfera.
The manuscript copies were housed in three countries, and each team transcribed the copy located in its respective locale according to challenge guidelines. Team USA worked with the version housed at the Yale University’s Beinecke Library, MS 328, ff. 1r-24v. Equipe France used a copy from the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Arsenal MS 8536, ff. 55r-78v. Squadra Italiatranscribed the text and images found in the Vatican Library, Urb. Lat. 752, ff. 3r-26v.
La Sfera Challenge II: July 17-31, 2020.
La Sfera Challenge II was a reprise of a similar competition that took place between three teams. This challenge took place among five teams, racing to transcribe multiple copies of Goro Dati's, La Sfera.
The manuscript copies are housed in five different repositories. Team Yale, captained by Caterina Agostini and Anne McLaughlin, worked with a version housed at Yale Beinecke 946. Team Wellcome, led by Marie Richards and SJ Lahey used the manuscript at the Wellcome Library, MS 231. Team Spencer transcribed the version found at the University of Kansas, Kenneth Spencer Research Library, Pryce MS P4. Laura Ingallinella, Karen Severud Cook, and N. Kıvılcım Yavuz lead this team. Team Vatican, led by team captains Carrie Beneš and Winston Black, examined the version in the Vatican Library, Vat. Lat. 7612. Team Newberry examined the version in the Newberry Library, VAULT slipcase Ayer MS map 1, captained by Isabella Magni and Suzanne Karr Schmidt.
