It is essential to recognize that class discussions and activities are an integral part of the learning process. Therefore, all students should attend classes regularly (face to face or remotely) and should come prepared to engage in scholarly discussions with their peers. Failure to do so will affect the students' academic outcomes in the class.
It is equally important to create and maintain a respectful class environment where we can all share our ideas and thoughts. Consequently, we will not tolerate any disrespectful behavior.
Each week students are required to participate in the Canvas discussion forum. These are short reaction writing exercises about the week's topic. These writing assignments will allow us to have an exciting and lively discussion.

There will be a midterm exam the week before fall break. It will consist of four discussion questions about the topics discussed in class up to the previous week. More details will be announced after the third week of classes.
Task: Each student should produce a narrative in the form of a scholarly article that could reasonably explain a social or historical process related to the Caribbean. The first step toward this goal is to choose a topic of interest. The student will have two weeks to select the topic and discuss it with the professor. Afterward, the second step is to identify the best sources for their research topic. Once they have done these preliminary steps, the third step is to craft a research question that could guide their analysis and interpretations of the sources. For the fourth step, the students will have to turn in a prospectus by the seventh week of classes that should include the topic of their research, a preliminary argument, a list of sources, and the research question that will guide their work for the subsequent weeks. The fifth and final step is the research narrative.
It would be best if the students devoted their time during the second part of the semester to analyze and interpret the sources to propose a well-constructed argument that could reasonably explain a specific issue about Caribbean societies. This writing should be the final narrative.
Purpose: This assignment seeks to encourage research, analytical, and writing skills.
Format: The paper should be between 8 to 12 pages long, and double-spaced. All pages should be enumerated in the lower right corner and the author’s name should appear in the upper right corner of each page. Citations and references in the article should follow the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition.
