US History & Government

Grade 11 begins with the colonial and constitutional foundations of the United States and explores the government structure and functions written in the Constitution. The development of the nation and the political, social, and economic factors that led to the challenges our nation faced in the Civil War are addressed. Industrialization, urbanization, and the accompanying problems are examined, along with America's emergence as a world power, the two world wars of the 20th century, and the Cold War. Students explore the expansion of the federal government, the threat of terrorism and the place of the United Stares in an increasingly globalized and interconnected world. There will be a continued focus on many social studies skills, particularly interpreting political cartoons and primary sources. I hope to instill in each of you the idea that history is a debate between competing interpretations of events, individuals and ideas of the past based on the utilization of historical evidence. Passing this course is a graduation requirement.

On a personal note, I would like to stress the importance of mutual respect in our class. It will be important to RESPECT one another's differences in terms of personal beliefs and political attitudes. I look forward to growing and learning with you this year as well as having a little fun along the way! Remember: a positive attitude goes a LONG WAY!
