February 2020

Unit of Inquiry

For their unit of inquiry project, Year 2 have been learning how to research the life and work of famous inventors. They are learning how to navigate a search engine, which words and phrases to use when searching and what kind of specific information to note down that would be helpful for their projects. Judging by what they have been able to find out, we are expecting interesting biographies about these important people in history. Keep it up, Year 2!

Maths

This week, students have been learning how to divide by 2, 5 and 10. They have been developing their understanding that to divide is to share equally. To help aid their calculations and concept of sharing, they used the Rekeneks. This tool has been invaluable to a lot of the children as they are able to consolidate their learning with it. Well done, Year 2!

Language

Over the week, the children have been developing their writing skills by focusing on how to write in 1st, 2nd and 3rd person with a primary focus on how to write in 3rd person for their non-chronological reports. They have also been learning how to use conjunctions to create longer, better and more interesting sentences. This is enabling to translate their creative thoughts down on paper and becoming better wordsmiths. Good work, Year 2!

January 2020

Unit of Inquiry

We have just started our new unit all about Inventors and Scientists. The children started the unit working in groups to solve the problem of not having enough chairs for their group. The children were introduced to the understanding that inventions stem from solving a problem or need. The children had to make sure their chair was the correct height, strong and supported their child's back. The children found creative ways to solve the problem! Next the children had a variety of inventions and took part in a 'See, Think, Wonder' during which the children came up with lots of questions about the different inventions and how they had changed over the years and in some cases what they were! (too young for cassette tapes!) The children will next focus on particular inventors and scientists as part of a project.

Maths

The child have started their next theme which is Multiplication and Division. The focus has been on multiplication this so far, with the children investigating arrays and writing repeated addition sentences and multiplication sentences. They have recognised the link between them and how they relate to each other. The children also investigated the commutative law and how multiplication can be done in any order.

Language

Year 2 have been finding out about Non-Chronological Reports this week. The children have looked at a variety of NCR's to identify the key features. They have also learned about paragraphs, introductions and sub-headings and have used these to work out what the title of a NCR would be. Next they will be focusing on the language features such as third person, past tense and compound and complex sentences.

21st November 2019

Unit of Inquiry

Everyone loves a party! So how great is it that our new unit is all about celebrations around the world. The students started this unit with a QR code questionnaire to pre-assess their knowledge on the subject. They then had the opportunity to express what they still wanted to learn about or wondered about during a visual thinking routine lesson. Some very interesting questions were raised by the children that will be used to guide the unit to fit their interests and expand their understanding of a variety of celebrations around the world. We will focus on the reasons people celebrate and how we celebrate.

Mathematics

We have been learning about addition and solving problems using concrete object, pictorial representations and numbers. We focused on fact families, adding/subtracting one number more or less and 10 more or less. In addition, we are adding one-digit and two-digit numbers using mental strategies, number lines and the column method.

Language

Year 2 have been reading traditional tales from other cultures and learning about the structural features of a story. They have to be able to identify and recall the main parts of a story by dividing it into an introduction, build-up, problem, resolution and conclusion.

International Week

Year 2 have been celebrating International Week and our focus was the Amazon River. The children have learned about different aspects of the Amazon River and Rainforest on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday they then created a 3d model of the river on Thursday. The children honed their map skills by locating continents and countries before using Google Earth to explore the Amazon river to create a detailed map of the river. The children also found out about tribes and animals that inhabit the rainforest as well as the different layers of the rainforest.

19 September 2019

It’s been full steam ahead this past three weeks in Year 2. The children have settled into their routine and enjoyed learning through fun interactive activities.

During our first week we got crafty and painted self-portraits and decorated our classroom doors to reflect our class books.

In English, we are looking at Instruction text. Learning all about time connectives, “bossy” verbs and broadening or vocabulary. For our provocation we had to save a baby dragon from an evil wizard!

We have been busy learning about place value in Mathematics.

We practiced our place value skills by working from a concrete stage to a pictorial stage and finally being able to show our understanding in the abstract stage.
