Homework 

Homework Expectations:

1. Students will complete their homework promptly so that they may show it to the teacher on the day that it is due.

2. Students will write their homework in their planners with clear descriptions of what the assignment requires.

3. The work will be neat and clearly presented, as modelled in the classroom.

Weekly Snapshot

• Math: Students are hard at work with Miss Lodato studying distributive and associative properties. Their first Math assessment is scheduled for this Thursday, September 24th.  

• Literature: This week, we will begin The Children's Homer by Padraic Colum. This novel is structured in two parts and gives a thorough, age-appropriate orientation to Homer's Iliad and Odyssey.

^ Poetry: We will conclude the last of the recitations for the Emily Dickinson poem, "There Is No Frigate Like a Book." In class, we have moved on to study "The Destruction of Sennacherib" by Lord Byron, a Romantic-era poem about an event we have studied in history class. Please note that your 6th grader should be actively working on recitation practice for "...Senacherib." Recitations will be scheduled for mid-October. 

• History: Our history curriculum for the fall is Ancient Empires and Foundations of Western Civilization. This era of history will repeat in 9th grade. For the last few weeks, we have studied Judaism and the story of the Israelites from the time of the Patriarchs through their Babylonian Exile and return to Jerusalem. We are nearing the end of this unit and will next set our sights on the study of Ancient Greece, then finally the Roman Republic, Empire, and rise of Christianity.    Our first History Assessment is tentatively scheduled for Monday, September 28th. The benefit of Monday assessments is that the placement gives students the weekend to study and organize their notes. This will be a timed, open-note assessment. 

• Science: We have made it to the final section of our Plate Tectonics unit - "earthquakes." Please note that our first Science assessment is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, October 1st. We also were surprised to discover that one of the volcanoes from our study - Anak Krakatoa - just erupted again earlier this month! If you and your 6th grader would like to learn more about this most recent eruption, I recommend watching this video HERE.  

• Grammar & Literacy: Our current grammar focus is review of predicate verbs, predicate nominatives, and predicate adjectives. This content was first introduced in 5th grade; we will continue where 5th grade left off. We are also working on understanding and using "who" / "which" clauses in our writing. 

• Composition: This week's unit returns us to Alfred Wegener and the theory of continental drift.
