Happy Monday,
Hope you had a good weekend. We are just 2 weeks from the end of the 3rd quarter. Thank you for checking Powerschool.
Recitations of 'O Captain, My Captain' by Walt Whitman begin later this week. Students will need to recite this poem by end of day 3/12.
'Frederick Douglass' begins this week. Please consider reading this book along with your student. It is a firsthand account of slavery in the 1800's including savage brutality, adultery, murder, and women being used as 'breeders.' Both my daughters read this book as 5th graders at Ridgeview, and it was included in our first year curriculum at Ascent. At some point, the selection was moved to 7th or 8th grade. This year, it returns again to 5th grade. Douglass' account, written at risk of his life and freedom, helped shape the course of history - strengthening the resolve of many to end the wicked practice of human slavery. I would love your help in navigating this book with your student and hope it will have a lifelong impact on all of us to fight for vulnerable and enslaved people - many of whom are children.
Gratefully,
Kim Patawaran
