• When working with equations, it is important to do things in the correct order. 

1. Parenthesis

2. Exponents

3. Multiplication and Division or Division and Multiplication  (from left to right)

4. Addition and Subtraction  or Subtraction and then Addition (from left to right) 

*Remember, if there are two sets of parenthesis, solve the inner most parenthesis first. 

• Terms to remember:

-Sum means the operation is addition 

-Difference means the operation is subtraction

-Product means the operation is multiplication

-Quotient means the operation is division

-Evaluate means you need to solve the problem

-Express means to write the equation, we are speaking in mathmatical language. 

Page 10 in your Math Workbook:

18a)  A sixth grade class was purchasing the prizes for the school carnival. They told Shop A that they needed 14 individual prizes and 12 packages containing 36 prizes each. Write an expression to represent the class order.

Think:  They need 14 individual PLUS 12 times 36  because there are 36 items in the twelve packages. 

14 + 12 x 36 =  (remember order of operations!)

18b)  This is the same problem, but with 12 Individual packages and 14 times the 36

18c) Find the difference (remember difference means subtraction!)
