Substitute Application Process
TO BECOME A SUBSTITUTE TEACHER IN OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT, YOU SHOULD POSSESS THE FOLLOWING:
A valid NJ Teaching Certificate OR
A valid State of New Jersey Substitute Teacher's Credential (required ONLY for substitute teacher/coach/advisor) *Substitute Nurses : If you do not possess a school nurse certificate, you must apply for a State of New Jersey Substitute Teacher's Credential and provide current RN license and transcripts.

TO APPLY FOR A STATE OF NEW JERSEY SUBSTITUTE TEACHER'S CREDENTIAL:
*ALL CERTIFICATION AND CREDENTIAL FEES BY THE NJDOE FROM JULY 1, 2023 - JUNE 30, 2024
STEP #1: Pay administrative fees for the criminal history background clearance on the New Jersey Department of Education Criminal History Website ($11).
STEP #2: Go to the IdentoGO website in order to:
Schedule an appointment
Pay fingerprinting fees ($66.05 for those who have never been fingerprinted in New Jersey, or $29.75 if previously printed through the NJDOE subsequent to March 2003).
Attend the scheduled appointment time and get fingerprinted. Make sure to bring the following to your scheduled appointment:
Picture Identification (ID) Note: Foreign passports will no longer be accepted as proof of identification;
IdentoGO New Jersey Universal Fingerprint Form; and
STEP #3: Apply for the Substitute Credential Online Apply online in the NJEDCert for the substitute credential and pay the $125.00 application fee. Questions concerning technical use of NJEDCert may be resolved by emailing GeneralCertQuestionsNJEdCert@doe.nj.gov. *ALL CERTIFICATION AND CREDENTIAL FEES BY THE NJDOE FROM JULY 1, 2023 - JUNE 30, 2024
Instructional Substitute Credential:
NEW! Completion of 30 semester-hour credits at an accredited college or university.
Criminal History Record Check: approval date must be within five months of the application date with “Substitute Teacher” as the job position.
Career and Technical Education Substitute Credential:
Evidence of two years of full-time work experience in the appropriate career cluster.
Work experience shall be documented by verification of employment by employer or presentation of a valid occupational license.
Criminal History Record Check: approval date must be within five months of the application date with “Substitute Teacher” as the job position.
Substitute School Nurse Non-Instructional Credential:
Valid New Jersey Registered Professional Nurse license.
Criminal History Record Check: approval date must be within five months of the application date with “Substitute Nurse” as the job position.
Upon completion of the online application, applicants should record their individual Tracking Number generated by NJEDCert during the application process, and then provide the following information/documentation with your tracking number to Middlesex County Office of Education (please contact them prior for times of operation) Phone: 732-249-2900 Fax: 732-296-6567

SUBSTITUTE RATES 2023-24 SCHOOL YEAR
Teachers: (CE, CEAS, or Standard Teacher Certificate): $150/day
Teachers (County Substitute Certificate) : $130/day
Long-Term Substitute Teacher for leave of absence position (must hold a valid CE, CEAS, Provisional or Standard certification in the area to attain this rate): $297.83/day
School Nurses: $225/day
Instructional Aides: $100/day
Other substitute positions available that do not require a state substitute or educational/teacher certification include:
Building Aides, Bus Drivers, Bus Aides, Computer Technicians, Custodial/Maintenance, Lunchroom/Playground AidesSecretarial/Clerk
All approved substitute teachers must attend required substitute teacher training prior to starting; trainings are typically provided the day before the monthly Board of Education meeting; please see the 2023-24 tentative training dates/times below: (all are via Zoom - link shared with approved substitutes prior to the training)
