North Brunswick Township Schools utilize several forms of data as part of its needs assessment process when developing this Mentoring Plan. The data included a variety of sources such as student achievement data, observation and evaluation data, formal and informal feedback from programs conducted in previous years, and feedback from the previous cohort of mentors/novice teachers.
Additionally, the data is reviewed at the District level by the Assistant Superintendent and Director of Curriculum and Instruction. Each school employs a School Improvement Panel (ScIP) to review data and report out to building and Central Office administration.
Principals/Supervising Administrators will use this Google Form to identify the mentor/buddy for any new certificated staff member for their building/department; mentors are required for new certificated staff who hold a CE or CEAS whereas a buddy is assigned to a newly hired certificated staff member who holds a Standard certificate but is new to the district. Please note: New hires with a Provisional certificate need to provide a mentor tracking form from the previous school district(s) to show on how many weeks they have completed; a minimum of 30 weeks is required as per the NJDOE (Mentoring Transfer Template)
As a reminder, the following list contains criteria set by the NJDOE for the selection of mentors as per N.J.A.C. 6A:9C-5.2:
1. Holds an instructional certificate and, when possible, is certified in the subject area/field in which the novice provisional teacher is working;
2. Has at least three years of experience and has taught full-time for at least two years within the last five years;
3. Does not serve as the mentee's direct supervisor nor conduct evaluations of teachers/other certificated staff.
4. Demonstrates a record of success in their classroom/their certificated position.

Mentor training is a required part of a school district’s mentoring plan (N.J.A.C. 6A:9C-5.2(a)7). These Mentor Training videos provide foundational training for new mentors or those needing a refresher. The presentations address required topics for mentors, help districts begin the process of training mentors, and supplement the training the district provides. Additional resources are provided in descriptions of each of the videos.
