This approach to math instruction can be used to teach any concept. The objectives will aim to deepen mathematical understanding while simultaneously reducing students’ math anxiety through the infusion of a myriad of technology resources. The focus is for students to confidently approach a mathematical concept in order to achieve a deeper understanding of the current math topic, seek help when needed, and support their learning with technology. The Chromebooks are tools for accessing resources to reinforce mathematics concepts which, in turn, builds student confidence in their ability to be successful in math. Students will benefit from this lesson structure in the following ways: 1) Increasing confidence in math by recognizing anxiety and task avoidance. 2) Allowing for student choice while guiding them to recognize the support that they need to be successful with the current topic. 3) Providing opportunities for students to act in a mentor role which boosts confidence and allows for deeper thinking and connection with the topic while supporting a peer. 4) Targeting remediation for students in need of more guided practice. 5) Increasing exposure to collaborative learning experiences. 6) Enhancing speaking/listening skills by giving students the opportunity to use academic vocabulary during domain specific discussions. 7) Providing opportunities to employ higher order thinking skills. The lessons are organized around an airport theme - flight school, co-pilot and flying solo. Students are given a choice of activities using a “Must Do”, “Pick One”, and “May Do” format. Data includes student self-assessment of their confidence level in mathematics, abilities to serve as peer-mentors, working alone on advanced topics, or participating in supported learning. The Math Resource teacher and the School Social Worker support the project in the 4th and 6th grade participating classes.
