Problem of Practice: How do we engage English Language Learners (ELLs)/Multilingual Learners (MLLs) more in instructional activities using varied technology?
District: Garden City Park
School: Garden City Park Elementary
Facilitator: Wafa Deeb-Westervelt
Principal: Amy Sullivan
Teachers: Joseph Carroll, Tamara Chyi, Lara Holzkamp, Margaret Ollen, Lauren Widmer
The Garden City Park teachers have decided to all use Book Creator for their projects. Book Creator is a technological tool that allows students to create, publish, and share their creations. This app, which students will use on their iPads, enables them to combine text, images, audio, and video to create interactive stories about their cultural backgrounds and life in America. These projects will enhance students’ written and oral English language acquisition skills. The projects are varied as the grade levels and the English proficiency levels of the ELLs/MLLs are also varied, but include engineering real-life problems to solve, phonics books (for the youngest ELLs who are in the entering phase of English language development, and communities around the world.
