Creating Scenario-Based Question Groupings

For assessments that are designed to present questions based on a special scenario or case study, Moodle quiz offers the option to build headings within the quiz. These Section headings can be used to present a scenario and related questions on a single quiz page.  This can be done multiple times within a quiz if needed!

Adding Section Headings for Grouping Questions

Step 1: Click on the Quiz title in the course. If the Quiz does not yet exist in the course, this guide explains the basic quiz building process

Step 2:  Once viewing the Quiz landing page, click the Add question.

Step 3To add the scenario, case study, or image to the heading,  click the first add link  and within the heading and select + new question

Step 4: Scroll down within the question chooser and select Description and then click Add

Step 5: Enter at name in the Question name field. This is used for organizational purposes in the question bank and is only seen by faculty during the Quiz building stage. 

Step 6: Enter the text or images in the Question text field

Tip: Use the Add image button to upload an image file. to the text field. 

Step 7: Once finished, scroll down and click Save Changes

Step 8: Drag the order of the related questions using the move icon so they are placed in order directly under the DescriptionAll related questions should be on the same page under the description item.  

Note: If more questions are needed during this process,  click the add icon and select + new question at any time.  

Step 10: Once the content of the heading has been finalized click the add icon and select + new section heading.

Note: A section heading after the last question allows you isolate the grouping  from additional headings or questions in the exam. 

Step 11: Once the heading is complete, verify that the shuffle checkbox is unchecked. This will ensure the description appears at the top of the page followed by the questions.!

Step 12: To add a custom heading title, click the pencil icon, enter a new heading title (or remove all the text) in the field and then press the return/enter key on your keyboard. 

With the heading setup complete,  repeat the process to add additional headings and/or finalize other quiz content as needed.  Be sure to complete a full preview  before opening to students to ensure it displays correctly!

Step 13: It is recommended that faculty complete a full preview ahead of their exam date!
