Entering and Removing Grade Overrides

Moodle activities with grading capabilities such as assignment and quiz will transfer grades into the gradebook  once the item has been scored in the activity. Instructors are able to manually overwide the initial activity score in the grader report. A grade overrides update the score for a student grade even if the score is later changed in the activity, For example,  even if a new score is entered in the assignment grader or another attempted in completed in a quiz, the over ride will continue to be the current grade. 

Entering a Grade Override

Step 1:  On the course page header, click Grades.

Step 2: Click into the cell for grade, enter the desired point total in the grade cell and push the enter/return key on your keyboard.

Once the grade override has been entered, the new score will display in the cell. The cell will also change to a tannish color indicating this score was entered using an override. This cell color change is normal and  is only visible to faculty in the course 

Tip: If the gradebook is set to also display percentage for grades, this will not initially appear when a grade has been entered.  Refreshing the page will update percentages!

Removing a grade override

If the score has changed in the course activity, removing the override will return the student score to the value showing in the actual activity.  Grade overrides can be removed using the Single view report in the gradebook. 

Step 1: While viewing the Grader report, click the pencil icon next to the activity title to access the Single view report

Step 2:  Once on the Single view report, uncheck the Overide check box for the appropriate student(s)

Pro Tip: To remove an override for all students, click the None link at the top of the column!

Step 3:  Once all overrides have been unchecked, click the Save button

Step 3:  A notification will appear indicating Grades were set for the items, click Continue. 


Once the override has been removed, the score found in the activity will return to the gradebook.
