Hiding Moodle Course Content from Students

There are often times when an instructor needs hide a course from student view, such as while constructing the course prior to the beginning of a semester or when consolidating multiple course sections.

Here are some suggestions and best practices about hiding an entire course versus content from student view.

Option 1: Hiding Course Content

If you wish to hide a course from view temporarily, such as prior to the beginning of the semester, it is usually best to hide the course content, not the course itself. If the course itself is hidden, students can become confused when they cannot see a course in which they expect to be enrolled. This scenario often triggers a call to the registrar or the ITS desk.

We recommend using the hide  menu option on right of each course item or section to hide content while constructing the course .

Step 1: Click the Gear icon and select Turn editing on from the drop-down menu.

Step 2:Click Edit next to the appropriate topic and select Hide Section from the drop-down menu. All content within the section will be hidden from students.

Note: To make an already hidden section visible to students, Show section will appear as an option in the menu instead of Hide Section.

Option 2: Hiding an Entire Course from Student View

You can also hide a course so that it will not be visible to enrolled students. This may be necessary when you are consolidating courses and do not wish to confuse students.

Remember, in doing this, you are removing the course from the students' My Courses list, so it would be advisable to contact the students via email prior to making this change so that there is no confusion on their part. It will save a great deal of anxiety and calls to the help desk!

Step 1: From the course page header, click Settings.

Step 2: Under Edit Course Settings, click the Visible drop-down menu and select Hide.

Note: To make the course once again visible to students, click Show from the drop-down menu.

Step 3: Scroll to the bottom and click Save and display when finished.
