Grading an Assignment Using a Rubric

Once a student submits an Assignment, faculty can review and score the submission using a rubric in the in-line grader.  A rubric must be setup ahead of time under the Grades section in the Assignment settings. For instructions relating to this process, please see Using a Rubric for Grading

Step 1:  Click on the assignment on your course page.

Step 2: Under the Grading summary, click View all submissions.

Step 3: Click Grade next to the student submission that you intend to score.  The Assignment grader will appear. The rubric will display on the right-hand grading panel.

Step 4: Review the student submission within the Assignment display panel (left-side of screen) or click on the file name to download a copy of the submission to your personal device for review.

The rubric will display on the right-hand grading panel.

Step 5: Under the Grade section, click the level (or cell) that meets the guidelines of each criterion.

Step 6: If desired, enter criterion level feedback in the text box on the right of each row. Note: Feedback entered in the criterion feedback boxes will only be visible to students when they click back into the assignment itself.

Repeat Steps 5-6 for each item as necessary for each criterion (row) in the rubric.

Step 7: If desired, enter any global comments about the assignment in the Feedback comments field.  Feedback comments always display for students in the course grade book along with the total points earned for the assignment submission.

Step 8: When finished, click Save changes or click Save and show next to review another student submission.

Where can students see the feedback?

Once the submission has been saved, students will be able to review the scored Rubric as well as any criterion-level or global feedback. Students can access this information by returning to the assignment activity in the course and scrolling down the Feedback section.  The global comments and total grade  will also appear in the course grade book.
