GENERAL INFORMATION

The NROTC Preparatory Scholarship (NPS) Program is designed to enhance midshipman candidates' academic, social, and physical foundations to prepare them for success in the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps, leveraging special, expanded partnerships between the Navy’s Reserve Officers Training Corps program and the schools which host them to capture untapped talent and potential. The program is similar to the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS). The “prep year” is designed to improve students' academic and life skills to the point they are prepared to compete in the rigorous academic challenges associated with the NROTC program.

2. Students selected for this program will complete a preparatory year at the host university using a university-funded NROTC Preparatory Scholarship.  In addition to providing tuition, room and board are usually available through the host institution. Some schools provide room and board as part of their NPS package. In some cases, the NPS student will be required to fill out application paperwork for room and board grants.

3. After successful completion of the University-run preparatory program, the student is awarded an NROTC National Scholarship leading to a commission upon graduation. The NROTC benefits provided by the Navy scholarship begin the term after successful completion of the University's one-year Preparatory Program and all other requirements.

4. Through NPS, university admissions and their Naval Science departments work together to select students who meet the Navy’s requirements for NROTC scholarships and are the right fit for the school.  These students are then screened by the Navy for a final check to ensure all requirements are met.

5. During the preparation year, students must successfully complete the preparation program (requirements can vary slightly from school to school but at a minimum includes 2.8 minimum GPA), successfully complete New Student Indoctrination, earn the recommendations of the University and the Professor of Naval Science, and complete a DODMERB physical.  If requirements are met, the student’s eligibility is confirmed, and they are awarded a 4 year NROTC scholarship.

6. Each NPS host university provides a web page containing application information, deadlines and other specifics, accessible through the below link:  https://www.nrotc.navy.mil/scholarships.html
