Transition services help students with disabilities prepare for life after high school by building the skills needed for employment, education or training, independent living, and community participation. Planning is personalized and based on each student's strengths, interests, preferences, and future goals.
In Texas, formal transition planning begins no later than the ARD meeting when a student is 13 years old (before turning 14), but the process can begin much earlier. By introducing career exploration, self-advocacy, and independence skills early, families and schools can help students build a strong foundation for a successful transition to adulthood.
Every student's path is unique—and transition planning helps turn their goals for adulthood into a plan for success.
