In January 2021, we successfully provided an all staff training exploring the topics of intersectionality, implicit bias, and microaggressions.
We asked staff to read the graphic novel New Kid by Jerry Craft in order to engage with us in dialogue, in an effort to better understand some of these complex issues that our students face.
We have since rolled out the book to 7th graders in their ELA classes. Over the course of two days, Jerry Craft engaged students in discussion sharing his journey to becoming a published author/illustrator as well as the creative process behind New Kid and Class Act.
Nauset Middle School has aligned with district initiatives to make concerted efforts of diversifying our staff to better represent the communities we serve. While district initiatives have included consulting from Dr. Kalise Wornum, Ed.D., further initiatives at a schoolwide level have included recommendations from DESE to provide for schoolwide diversity, equity, and inclusion.
