A group of NRMS staff members came together at the beginning of August 2020 to form the Equity Team here at NRMS, meeting on a biweekly basis.
We have since expanded and additionally added a student led group to continue to address and combat any type of hate and discrimination experienced within our school.
Our mission is to create, foster, and uphold an equitable and inclusive learning environment in which all students, staff, families, and community members feel safe, respected, and represented.
We have targeted specific focus areas in order to start to address and build on the community at hand. Some of these specific focus areas include representation, addressing our school environment and curriculum, diversifying our hiring practices, providing learning opportunities as well as creating opportunities for engaged feedback.
We commit to, being a voice for those who have too often been silenced.
We commit to, naming injustices, engaging in difficult conversations, and coming up with sustainable solutions.
We commit to, supporting BIPOC and LGBTQIA students by creating safe spaces in which they can feel heard.
We commit to, strengthening curricula to better represent diverse and historically marginalized voices consistent with the #ourvoices movement.
We commit to, monitoring and correcting discrepancies that may exist between our own staffing and BIPOC students as well as other marginalized communities.
We commit to, working with administration to ensure we are recruiting and retaining a diverse and culturally responsive staff.
We commit to, providing annual professional development on diversity, equity, and inclusion to support our efforts.
We commit to, collaborating with all levels of leadership in our school district to combat and tackle issues of systemic oppression and/or bias.
We commit to, examining our policies and practices to ensure that we are upholding an equitable environment for ALL.
