You need at least 9 credits per semester to be full time, and cannot take more than 12 without special permission.
See your Program of Study for required and optional classes. If you and your thesis advisor have questions about curriculum, ask your program advisor (Nick, Ryan, or Rebecca).

Two years is a short time to take classes and do research! Typically MS students take 2-3 full graded classes per semester in the first year, leaving 1-2 classes for the second year.
All MS degrees require at least 18 credits (~6 classes) of 500+ level graded coursework. Pass/Fail classes such as EES 605/606 and any Pass/Fail EES 685/697/698 credits will not contribute to this (see: Requirements for Master's Degrees).
You can take up to 6 credits of 400-level NAU courses to count towards your MS degree, but not towards the 18 graded graduate credits. You will need prior approval by your advisor, and must file an "Out of Career form" (available on the Registrar's Office website).
See your Handbook and Requirements for Doctoral Degrees. If you have already completed graduate coursework (e.g., a Master's degree or graduate certificate) you will be able to transfer some of these credits to count towards your PhD, freeing you up to focus more on research.
There is a maximum number of thesis or dissertation credits (EES 699 or 799) that you can count towards your degree. Also, once you start taking these credits you must take them every semester (Fall and Spring) until you graduate. Do not start taking these credits until your proposal is approved by your committee. To get credits for research you do before this point, enroll in EES 685, 697, or 698 with your advisor.
Plan ahead: many classes are not offered every semester or every year.
Do a Class Search in Louie to see who is teaching what in the coming semester. Tip: to find all available classes in the next semester for a particular subject, enter a prefect e.g., "ENV" or "FOR" and then choose greater than 500 for grad classes. De-select the open classes checkmark to see those that are full - sometimes more room can be made for grad students if you really want a class.
Alternatively choose Browse Course Catalog in Louie to see all classes in a department and which are scheduled in the coming semester.
