Kappa Kappa Psi (ΚΚΨ) is a National Honorary Band Fraternity established on November 27th, 1919, at Oklahoma State University (formerly known as the Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College). The primary aim of Kappa Kappa Psi is to serve as a student service and leadership organization, working closely with the university's Director of Bands to promote leadership and enthusiasm in the band program.
The fraternity's objectives are to provide service activities for the band program, to offer members valuable experiences in organization and leadership, and to provide opportunities for social interaction. Membership in Kappa Kappa Psi is based on the belief that serving the band, music department, and sponsoring institution promotes the cause of band music and musicians across college bands nationwide. It is an honorary membership only bestowed to the students who best exemplify what it means to be a brother.
By following Kappa Kappa Psi's "Road to Wisdom," students gain experience planning, organizing, and carrying out service and social projects that benefit their band program(s) and represent their band as student leaders. The fraternity provides a developmental group for students, establishing worthwhile goals, guideposts, and service to others for a meaningful and memorable college experience.
Membership in Kappa Kappa Psi is an activity in education, service, and social growth that enriches band students' lives and fosters an appreciation for the best in music and what it takes to achieve excellence. Our National Fraternity is dedicated to this end and cordially invites your participation in this effort.
Be it known that Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Fraternity for College Band-members, is an organization operating exclusively in the field of the college and university bands, and for the following several purposes:
To promote the existence and welfare of the college and university bands and to cultivate at large a wholesome respect for their activities and achievements.
To honor outstanding band members through privilege of membership extended as a reward for technical achievement and appreciation for the best in music.
To stimulate campus leadership and promulgate an uncompromising respect through the medium of the college band for gracious conduct, good taste, and unswerving loyalty.
To foster a close relationship between college bands and promote a high average of attainment by the performance of good music and selection of worthwhile projects.
To provide a pleasant and helpful social experience for all engaged in college band work and to cooperate with other musical organizations in any manner consistent with the purposes of the institution at which chapters are located.
As Kappa Kappa Psi brothers, we must lead by example and always exhibit positive qualities. Our actions can impact those around us, so we should consistently strive to inspire others. Bohumil Makovsky's teachings on the qualities of a brother are essential for anyone on the Road to Wisdom.
These Qualities Include:
Honor
Brothers should conduct themselves with honor at all times. Our service to college and university bands serves as an example to others. We should take pride in these accomplishments and not let anything tarnish our honorable reputation.
Integrity
The character of our brotherhood is based upon the principles of decency and sincerity. Our impeccable integrity lets others know we can always be trusted to keep our word.
Respect for others is a cornerstone of Kappa Kappa Psi. Our diverse membership is an asset that cannot be taken for granted. Using this strength to our advantage requires respect for others and their points of view. In return, we earn the respect from others by treating them as equals.
Service to band programs and the Fraternity require people who are devoted to those organizations. Working together is the key to achieving our goals. Being loyal and dependable is therefore essential to our success.
