New Student Advising

Welcome! We are so excited for you to join the NAU family as an incoming freshman.

During New Student Advising, we will discuss topics like academic requirements, course enrollment, and advising appointments. We are offering New Student Advising in two formats: a virtual presentation and an online course module.

So What Does New Student Advising Look Like?

New Student Advising starts with the completion of Priority Enrollment and concludes with a presentation/online module and a meeting with an advisor.

Complete Priority Enrollment

Completing a Priority Enrollment (PE) profile is the first step to New Student Advising and lets your advisor add some courses your first semester schedule. The advising hold on your account will be removed - you do not need to schedule an appointment yet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sign up for Presentation or Online Module

We want to ensure each student comes to NAU with an understanding of Gateway Advising, degree requirements, and other advising topics. We are offering New Student Advising in two forms: a group Zoom presentation and an individual online module. Students are able to choose which format they would like.

You can start the sign-up process by selecting the Incoming Freshman or Honors College Freshman options further down the page.

Attend Presentation or Complete Module

Zoom presentations will begin in May after the conclusion of the Spring 2021 semester. You will need to select a presentation day and time to attend. The Zoom link will be sent to your NAU email. During the presentation, we will also assist you with scheduling an appointment with an advisor.

The online module is completed individually by the student with a quiz to check for understanding (this quiz does not affect your GPA). After completing this quiz, the module will explain how to schedule an appointment with an advisor. The link for the online module will be sent to your NAU email.

Meet One-on-One with an Advisor

After attending a Zoom presentation or completing the online module, students will then meet with an advisor to discuss their major and Fall 2021 schedule, make any necessary changes, and answer questions. Students can also be shown how to make changes to their schedule, such as adding, dropping, and swapping classes.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do I get my schedule/how do I sign up for classes?

After you complete Priority Enrollment, an advisor can add come courses to your Fall 2021 schedule and your advising hold will be removed. Once the hold is removed, you will be able to add, drop, and swap classes in your schedule.

We will show you how to make changes to your schedule when you meet with an advisor after completing New Student Advising.

We recommend waiting until you meet with an advisor before dropping any courses. You can also check out our online enrollment resources webpage for more information.

Who is my advisor? How do I contact them?

Your advisor is assigned based on your major/interest area upon applying to NAU. You can view and contact your assigned advisor through your LOUIE account. You can also find their contact information through the Gateway Staff Directory.

Watch our YouTube video to learn more about advisors and how to find your assigned advisor.

How can I change my major?

You can change your major through your LOUIE account. On your home page, select the "Other Academic" dropdown menu. Select "Change of Major" and click the double arrows. If you are unable to access the change of major in your LOUIE account, see an Academic Advisor. You can find your assigned advisor in your LOUIE account.

We have a YouTube tutorial that explains the process.

NOTE: It is highly encouraged to talk with an Academic Advisor before changing your major, as doing so can impact financial aid, enrollment, and graduation timeline.
