Reading: This year, we will be focusing on reading comprehension. The students will learn to use different strategies associated with close reading, such as circling unknown words, starring key details, making connections, and asking questions. These strategies help students "dig deeper" and strengthen their comprehension skills.
Students will use their metacognition skills and think about what they are reading. When they are reading, they will "dig deeper" to understand the text by making predictions, connections, inferences, asking questions, visualizing and summarizing. One way to show they are "digging deeper" is by writing thinking stems.
Writing: students will be exposed to a variety of writing genres. They will be writing narratives, expository, descriptive, and persuasive pieces. For each writing assignment, the students will navigate through the writing process and will be provided different graphic organizers. This will ensure students map out their thoughts and structure the layout of their writing pieces.
