Informational Breakout Sessions on a variety of different topics will be offered including:
Mental Health and Social/Emotional Well-Being
- Hear from representatives from local agencies who have programs surrounding young adults and mental health. This session is intended for both students and families to learn more about how to recognize signs of individuals who may be struggling with their mental health or social-emotional well being and resources that are available to them in the local community. This panel will also focus on resources and strategies for coping with emotional stress or mental health issues related to career or college success, including how to decide whether or not to disclose mental health to employers or colleges, when to disclose, and the process for doing so.
Lessons Learned from Parents
- Hear from parents of students with disabilities who have recently gone through the transition process, as well as representatives from local agencies who work primarily with individuals who are transitioning to adulthood. This session is intended for parents of students with disabilities who are about to transition and would like to hear from other parents about the process and what they wished they had known when they were navigating the transition process. Topics that will be discussed include life lessons parents learned while navigating the special education process, areas or skills parents wished they had focused on earlier in the transition process, things they wish they had known, and skills that adult agencies are looking for when meeting with young adults who are transitioning.
Peer Panel: Self-Determination
- Hear from individuals with disabilities who have recently transitioned to adult-life and are successful in the major areas of transition, including employment, independent living, higher education, and transportation. This session is intended for students who are about to go through the transition process and would like to hear from others about their stories, including successes, challenges, and inspirations.
